A critical conversation took place in Colombo on April 24, as NetWwater, the Rotary Club Colombo West, and the Marga Institute convened a high-level roundtable to address the realities of menstrual hygiene management in Sri Lanka.

Representing FPA Sri Lanka, Dr. Chintha Rupasinghe (Director – SRH) joined as an invited speaker, presenting on “Advancing Menstrual Hygiene: A Strategic SRH Priority for Sustainable Development in Sri Lanka”.

Key takeaways from the discussion:

• Period poverty continues to impact millions, limiting access to education and opportunity.

• Many girls are still unprepared for their first period—showing the urgent need for earlier, accurate education.

• Conventional menstrual products raise growing health and environmental concerns.

• Breaking stigma requires a cultural shift using simple, inclusive language and meeting young people where they are.

• Sustainable alternatives are not just an option, but a necessity.

With increased attention from policymakers and stakeholders, the momentum is building, but sustained action, open dialogue, and collective responsibility are essential.
