Understanding Erectile Dysfunction

ED is the persistent inability [For at least 3 months] to get or maintain an erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual activity. It is common among men, especially as they age, but can affect younger men as well. It may be an early indicator of cardiovascular or any other disease, making early medical assessment important.

Common Causes

  • Physical: Heart disease, diabetes, hormonal imbalances (low testosterone), neurological issues, medication side effects, smoking, alcohol

  • Psychological: Stress, anxiety, depression, relationship problems

Signs and Symptoms

  • Difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection

  • Reduced sexual desire

  • Problems with ejaculation

Diagnosis

A healthcare provider may conduct a physical exam, review medical history, and order blood tests to determine underlying causes.

Treatment Approaches

  • Lifestyle changes: healthy diet, exercise, quitting smoking

  • Counseling or therapy for psychological causes

  • Medications such as PDE5 inhibitors (e.g., Viagra)

  • Devices like vacuum pumps

  • Hormone replacement therapy or surgery in some cases
