Discussion of Best Practices on Preventing Teenage Pregnancy

Discussion of Best Practices on Preventing Teenage Pregnancy, organized by the State Ministry of Women and Child Affairs is taking place today, the 31st of August 2018.

Mr Thushara Manoj – FPA Sri Lanka’s Senior Manager- Youth & CSE was appointed as a Resource Person to the Ministry to prepare a National Action Plan to prevent teenage pregnancy in Sri Lanka.

Child rights and Probation Officers, Officers attached to the Women and Child Division of the Police, Development Officers of the Women’s Ministry are participants at this dialogue where a tool is being developed to be implemented, to enable all organisations and stakeholders to work cohesively to reach the desired outcome.

Adoloscent pregnancy is a health issue: the youngest mothers face a heightened risk of maternal complications, death and disability, including obstetric fistula. Their children face higher risks as well. It is also an issue of human rights: adolescent pregnancy often means an abrupt end of childhood, a curtailed education and lost opportunities.
