FPA Sri Lanka commemorate “Founders Day”

We at FPA Sri Lanka commemorate “Founders Day” on the 15th of January. Since been formed in 1953, vast strides have been made by FPA Sri Lanka in the fields of Family Planning, Sexual and Reproductive Health and welfare. Here is the list of the organizations’ founder members and some interesting facts about most of them. (Reference ‘FPA Ceylon’, FPA –Golden Jubilee Publication)

  1. Dr (Mrs) L.O. Abeyratne - Dr [Mrs] Augusta Abeyratne was the second woman of our country to qualify as a doctor and was a prominent gynecologist.

  4. Dr. (Mrs) F.K. Ram Aluvihare
  5. Dr. V. Amirthalingam
  6. Mrs. Amirthalingam
  7. Mrs. C. Corea - A true intellectual, she was the first woman to obtain a First class in Economics from the Ceylon University. She made Family Planning a reality in a rather hostile environment probably influenced by her upbringing in a family involved in public service. (Her father was an obstetrician and her mother was a member of the Women’s Franchise Union and a Founder Member of the All Ceylon Women’s Conference.
  8. Mrs. E. Deraniyagala
  9. Prof. C.C. de Silva - His deep concern for the welfare of mothers and children made him a fervent proponent of family planning. He was a professor of Paediatrics at the Universities of Colombo and Peradeniya. Professor C.C. de Silva served as President of the Family Planning Association from 1956 to 1958 and again from 1976-1977. As a member of the Executive Committee, the National Council and the Medical Council he contributed a great measure to guide the FPA in its formative years.

  14. Dr. (Mrs) Mary Rutnam – She initiated many progressive movements for women. The Lanka Mahila Samithi and the Family Planning Association of Ceylon were her most notable achievements. She was devoted to the development of maternal health, quality milk for children and their moral and physical wellbeing.
