What is Vaginismus?
Vaginismus (now often classified under genito-pelvic pain/penetration disorder) is an involuntary tightening of the pelvic floor muscles, which can make penetration painful or impossible. This can affect sexual intercourse, medical exams, or tampon use. It may result from physical or psychological factors, and effective treatment combines physical therapy, gradual desensitization, and counseling.
Causes
Physical: Infections, injuries, hormonal changes, menopause, childbirth complications
Psychological: Fear of pain, anxiety, past sexual trauma or abuse, stress, relationship difficulties
Symptoms
pain, burning, or tightness during attempted penetration.
Difficulty inserting tampons or during pelvic exams
Muscle spasms in the vaginal area
Treatment Options
Treatment often combines physical and psychological approaches:
Pelvic floor physical therapy to relax and strengthen muscles
Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) or counseling to address fears and anxiety
Gradual desensitization using vaginal dilators
Open communication with partners and healthcare providers to support recovery
When to Seek Help
If you experience discomfort or pain during penetration, consulting a healthcare professional can provide diagnosis and tailored treatment plans.
