The UK All Party Parliamentary Group on Population, Development and Reproductive Health (APPG on PD & RH) conducted a study tour to Sri Lanka which took place from the 11th – 17th of November.

The cross-party UK Parliamentary delegation had a series of meetings with Government and Non-government service providers, key decision makers including Sri Lankan parliamentarians & UN representatives involved in delivering Sexual and Reproductive Health services in various settings and at different levels. The aim of this study tour was to sensitize UK parliamentarians on replicable best practices, achievements and challenges in reaching global Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) targets and how it has impacted on the development of the country. The UK APPG on PD & RH has conducted similar study tours to Burma, Nepal and Malawi.

 The chair of the UK APPG on PDRH, Baroness Jenny Tonge, led the delegation along with 7 MPs/peers, and Ann Mette Kjearby, the Parliamentary and Policy Advisor (APPG and PD & RH) UK . The MPs and Peers are Baroness Anne Jenkin, Lord Steele, Heather Wheeler MP, Virendra Sharma MP, Karl Turner MP, Holly Lynch MP and Nigel Evans MP. The Parliamentarians who participated in this study tour will be invited and supported to become active members of the UK APPG on PDRH and raise awareness of global SRHR issues in the UK Parliament and abroad upon their return.

 The Family Planning Association of Sri Lanka in partnership with the Ministry of Health was a co-host to this delegation with support from the IPPF Head Office, London.
