FPA Sri Lanka at the symposium organized by the Members of the Community Governance Platform of Sri Lanka

Local governments are a hierarchical structure that constantly work with the people to fulfill their needs and also provides opportunities for communities to engage in governance. Due to these reasons, local and international NGO's, academia, and other institutions have a keen interest to work with local government structures. Considering the working experiences of these institutions with the local government of Sri Lanka, there are certain questions that require answers such as 'Does the current system of local government include citizens, especially the marginalized, like women, youth and ethnic minorities in decision making processes?' and 'What can we do to make local government authorities more accountable and responsive to the needs and entitlements of citizens?'

A symposium was organized by the Members of the Community Governance Platform of Sri Lanka along with Chrysalis to find solutions for these questions as well as to discuss on local government and participatory democracy in Sri Lanka. FPA Sri Lanka was invited for this meeting as we too advocate for womens rights and network with other CSO/ organizations for advovacy purposes.

Ms Sonali Gunasekera- Director Advocacy, Mr Senel Wanniarachichi - Senior Manager Advocacy and Communications and Mr Thushara Manoj - Senior Manager CSE and Youth represented FPA Sri Lanka at this forum on the 25th of July. The meeting was held at the Mövenpick Hotel in Colombo.
