1. Mammogram – what is it?

A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast that helps detect breast cancer early. For a mammogram the breast is pressed between 2 plates to flatten and spread the tissue. It can find lumps that are too small to be felt during a clinical breast exam.

2. When should you get a mammogram?

Every 1-2 years starting at age 40. You may need get one before you turn 40 if someone in your family had breast cancer at a young age, or if you have cysts in your breasts, which can hide the symptoms of breast cancer.
