Youth for Rights’ – Launch and Showcase Event of social media content addressing SRHR myths and Abortion

The Advocacy Unit of FPA, with the support of RFSU (Riksförbundet för Sexuell Upplysning – IPPF Member Association, Sweden), conducted a comprehensive Media Fellowship Programme in 2022. The Fellowship was designed considering the critical role social media plays in countering negative stereotypes against women and other marginalized communities.

At today’s event - 8th February 2023, the pool of fellows representing Sri Lanka’s diverse population will be presented their impactful videos, comics, short movies and other creatives that were produced.

10 of the fellows were media experts, and the other 20 were shortlisted and selected from 120 youth from the Northern, Southern, Eastern and Central provinces trained on mobile storytelling (MoJo) on SRHR topics. Their creatives were developed under the mentorship of Dr.M.Rasmin (RFSU Project Consultant), M.Aswer, Nirasha Piyawadani, P.Sivakumar (Manager FPA Suwa Sewa Centre – Batticaloa), Thushara Manoj (Senior Manager – FPA Advocacy Unit) and Desaree Soysa (Project Consultant – FPA Sri Lanka.

Launch of the report on ‘Perceptions and Attitudes on Abortion in Sri Lanka'.

The aim of this study was to understand public perceptions of and attitudes towards abortion. The study includes 1081 survey interviews across all nine Provinces and 11 Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), each focused on predetermined key demographics.

‘FPA Sri Lanka, as the premier non-governmental organization working in the space of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, in partnership with other agencies, firmly believes that a favourable legal environment for everyone’s Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights is a pressing and long-standing need of this country. It is hoped that this research and its report will enrich the already existing body of publications on the topic of Abortion in Sri Lanka. It is also expected that it will inform the stakeholders and policymakers on how to move the agenda on improving the highly restrictive law on Abortion’ - Thushara Agus - Executive Director, FPA Sri Lanka.
