Training programme on Sexual and Reproductive Health in Emergencies for Youth Volunteers in the Galle District.

A training programme on SRH in Emergencies was held for 25 youth volunteers in the Galle district on the 2nd and 3rd of September 2022 at The Garden Hotel in Thalpe, Galle. It was organized by the Koggala Service Delivery Point of the Outreach Unit under the SPRINT IV Project. SPRINT IV is a humanitarian project providing life-saving SRH support onset of emergencies. The training aimed to educate and train youth volunteers to build their capacity and prepare them as leaders and responders in a crisis. 

The training covered various topics coming under the umbrella of SRHiE.

Day 1: The participants gained extensive knowledge of Disaster Management and the Minimum Initial Service Package (MISP) provision in a crisis; the two comprehensive sessions were conducted by Dr. (Brig.) Tamara Wickramasekara including an interactive activity on SGBV in an emergency situation. Also, a session on Human Sexuality, reproductive systems and functions and SRH issues in emergencies. This was conducted by Dr. Janaka Godevithana, a lecturer in Community medicine from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ruhuna, providing knowledge on sexuality, reproductive health and contraceptives. 

Day 2: The second day of the training included a session on STI/HIV-AIDS and issues in emergencies which was conducted by Nalin Deshapriya, Public Health Inspector of MOH in Hikkaduwa. This was followed by a brief but comprehensive session on psychosocial support in emergencies, led by Malsha Siriwardena, the Psychology Counsellor of FPA Suwa Sewa Centre in Koggala. The second day of the training also included interactive group activities on strategic development and analysis of a case study related to SRHiE and a discussion on the role of youth in an emergency, which were coordinated by the Director of Outreach, Mr Rajapakse.
