A Sensitization Workshop for Assistant Superintendents of Police on Men who have Sex with Men (MSM) and Transgender (TG) on health, legal and social issues for HIV prevention in Sri Lanka

A Sensitization Workshop on health, legal and social issues related to HIV prevention among Men who have Sex with Men (MSM) and Transgender (TG) communities in Sri Lanka was held on the 10th of March, 2017 at Avani Kalutara Resort targeting 65, newly promoted, Assistant Superintendents of Police, who will be later appointed to various districts across the country., under the purview of Multi-country South Asia Global Fund HIV Programme. 

 The objectives of the workshop were:

  • To increase awareness about Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGIE) in order to reduce the stigma and discrimination.
  • To expose participants to Key Populations.
  • To strengthen the advocacy efforts to SOGIE and create more allies within the law enforcement sector. 

The issues addressed were: 

  • Local and global health sector response on reducing HIV transmission through reduction of stigma and discrimination
  • Laws related to LGBTI in Sri Lanka and its practical applicability
  • Social and economic impact on increased vulnerabilities due to marginalization and discrimination
  • Drawing parallels between the international and local legal situation and how the law enforcement sector can make a difference to help achieving the global and national targets for HIV 

 

 

The welcome address was given by Ms. Thushara Ranasinghe Agus, Executive Director – FPA Sri Lanka and the resource persons of the workshop were Ms. MadushaDissanayake – Director-Public Affairs, Policy & Advocacy, FPA Sri Lanka, Dr. Janaki Vidanapathirana – Consultant Community Physician, National STD/ AIDS Control Programme, Dr. Prathiba Mahanamahewa – Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Law-University of Colombo, Mr. Ajith Rohana – Deputy Inspector General of Police & Attorney-At-Law and 4 individuals representing  the Community Role Models Hub of FPA.
