Reaching the unreached to promote Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights

Rural communities experience many difficulties in accessing General and Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) services. The need to travel greater distances, lack of public transportation, poor road conditions, poverty and even restrictions from one’s own family are some of the limitations faced by persons needing to recieve these necessary services.

Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) is a fundamental human right of every woman and man and we at FPA Sri Lanka, work towards reaching out to the poor, marginalisedstigmatised, socially excluded and the under-served communities to enable access to quality healthcare services. Mobile clinics offer flexible and viable options for treating isolated and vulnerable groups and is one mechanism that has helped take SRH and general health services closer to the target clientele.

Services offered at these mobile clinics include the same family planning services available at the Centre for Family Health in Colombo as well as cancer screening via Pap smear and manual breast examination, counselling on sexual health, gynaecological problems, STI/HIV testing and sub fertility services. A range of free testing services are also offered, including tests for diabetes, blood pressure and BMI testing

Here are some picture highlights of Mobile Clinics held under the purview of the Outreach Unit in the month of June 2017.

Two clinics conducted by the Ampara Service Delivery Point (SDP) provided a variety of medical and counselling services to approximately 90 persons.

The Koggala Suwa Sewa Centre conducted a mobile clinic at the Kombala Community Hall, located in an area that was severely affected by the recent floods. It was organized with the support of the MOH Imaduwa and served over 70 clients.

The Nuwara- Eliya Service Delivery Point conducted 2 clinics at Nildandahinna and Madulla where approximately 180 persons received a variety of SRH services.
