Minimum Initial Service Package (MISP) training programmes in Jaffna

The Minimum Initial Service Package (MISP) is a set of priority lifesaving interventionsrequired to respond to reproductive health needs at the onset of every humanitarian crisis.   The 5 objectives to be achieved by its implementation are:

  1. Ensuring the health cluster /sector identifies an agency to lead implementation of MISP
  2. Preventing sexual violence and assisting survivors
  3. Reducing transmission of HIV
  4. Preventing  excess maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity
  5. Planning for comprehensive RH services,integrated into primary health care.

In addition to the 5 key priorities, the ones listed below are also considered essential in the implementation process.

  • Family planning
  • Youth and adolescent reproductive health
  • Distribution of hygiene kits and menstrual protection materials

The MISP training carried out in Jaffna was the 04th local training at district level and saw the participation of 43 Government officials comprising Medical Officers,Relief Officers,DMC Coordinators,Probation Officers, Engineers etc, who are persons identified as the first responders at district level. This event was conducted by FPA Sri Lanka in partnership with the Disaster Management Center,District Secretariat of Jaffna and theDisaster Management Coordinating Unit-Jaffna District. The main facilitators were chosen from the MISP Core-trainer pool and they were Dr.HarishchandraYakandawala-Medical Director,FPA Sri Lanka, Mr.ChathuraLiyanaarachchi Assistant Director-Preparedness-DMC and Dr.Dinesh Fernando-Senior Lecturer-Department of Forensic Medicine-University of Peradeniya.
