The Post 2015 outcome document named as TRANSFORMING OUR WORLD: THE 2030 AGENDA FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT was adopted on the 2^nd of August by 193 countries. This draft document of 17 goals will drive the global agenda on social, economic and environmental development and sustainability for the next 15 years and will be formally adopted by Member States at the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit in September 2015. If approved, implementation of this agenda will begin on 1st January 2016.

The proposed new SDG’s that were built on the 8 Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which expire this year, are in place to finish the job of the MDGs, and ‘leave no one behind’. They will  determine the global course of action to end poverty, promote prosperity and well-being for all, protect the environment and address climate change. The 2030 Agenda includes noteworthy victories for women and girls such as commitment from Governments to:

• End discrimination and gender-based violence
• End child marriage and female genital mutilation
• Ensure access to sexual and reproductive health care services and education for all
• Protect women’s and girls’ reproductive rights
• Eliminate gender disparities in schools and ensure equal access to education

Other notable gains were:

• Inclusion of ICPD and Beijing platform of action as reference( IPPF Member Associations personally appealed to relevant foreign offices and permanent missions for this inclusion).

FPA Sri Lanka as a MA also appealed to our Government for their support especially in the areas of Sexual and Reproductive Health services and the protection of Reproductive Rights of women and girls.

• Inclusion of “other status” in the document along with ‘sex, ‘race’, ‘persons with disabilities’, ‘person living with HIV’. (So as to include the LGBT community)
  • All countries by 2030 to ensure that all individuals have access to SRH services. This includes family planning, information and education, and the integration of Reproductive Health into national strategies and programmes.
