What is sexual abuse?
Sex with a person below the age of 18 without his/her permission or consent is Child sexual abuse (CSA). Many adolescents are victims of CSA. The abuser (perpetrator) is usually a person who is known and trusted by the adolescent and the family such as a close relative or family friend.
What is incest?
Incest is sexual abuse by an immediate family member such as an elder brother or father. It is easily the worst form of sexual abuse because the abuser uses the natural trust and affection of the relationship (with the victim) to commit a horrible crime
How does child sexual abuse affect victims?
Child sexual abuse causes severe psychological trauma. Victims feel worthless, to lose their self-esteem, become withdrawn and depressed. School work suffers and unwanted pregnancy and infections are added risks. If you are a teenager who is being abused or has been abused, it’s important to understand that you are not at fault.
What is rape?
Rape is a type of sexual assault usually involving sexual intercourse or other forms of sexual penetration carried out against a person without that person's consent. Males and females can both be raped. Victims of rape are at risk of unwanted pregnancy (if a woman), STIs/HIV and Rape causes severe psychological trauma. Rape is a serious criminal offence.
What is statutory rape?
Statutory rape is where a person has sex with a girl who is less than 16 years, with or without her consent. Statutory rape is a serious criminal offence.
What are the signs of an abusive relationship?
Anyone can find themselves in an abusive relationship, no matter their age, gender, or sexual orientation. There are different types of abuse that can affect your body, your emotions, and your self-esteem.
