“Children are our most valuable natural resource”

The importance and sense of fulfillment a child brings to one’s family cannot be stressed sufficiently. The birth of a child brings a sense of stability, devotion and an indescribable bond between parent and child. The Family Planning Association of Sri Lanka (FPA Sri Lanka) strongly advocates that all couples should enjoy and thrive in such close affinities.

However, having a child at a given moment may not be possible for all couples who wish to complete their family. This is an exceptionally disheartening and overwhelming situation to be in. It perhaps can only be truly felt by those who faced with such a possible absence in their lives.

A real life story that took place within the walls of FPA Sri Lanka, speaks to the very heart of such a situation. A very educated couple, married for approximately three years, was unable to have children. Their state of Sub fertility was gradually beginning to have a strain on their marriage, as each month, the wife’s mother-in-law kept a tab on the date of her menses and continued to pressurize her son and daughter-in-law. Much investigation was carried out to find out the cause for the couple’s state of Sub fertility, while five years gradually passed. There appeared to be no overt cause for this, and the staff at FPA Sri Lanka continued reassuring them that there was no clear reason as to why they should not be able to conceive. The lady was exceptionally touched by an act of kindness by a nurse working at the Clinic who said “I’ll light a candle at Church so that you will conceive.” The couple finally did, having two children consecutively! Many years later, once when meeting her Doctor, the lady declared to her children, “If it was not for these people, you may have not been here!”

Such circumstances are faced by countless couples in Sri Lanka. Many of them do not have the opportunity to seek help in such a sensitive and personal area of their life. The Family Planning Association of Sri Lanka sees the dire need for affordable access to services for couples from all segments of the population who are unable to have children. Being the pioneer in Reproductive Health for the past six decades in Sri Lanka, we have enjoyed and reaped the benefits of our labor. The Association is ecstatic in being able to ensure that the work our forefathers and foremothers set out to do is completed.

By launching this initiative for us we anticipate that you will continue to be with us in every step of the way until we make our dream…a reality.
