International Literacy Day 2019

International Literacy Day is celebrated annually on 8 September. The issue of literacy is a key component of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.

FPA Sri Lanka uses this day as an opportunity to highlight other types of literacy that are equally important such as Health literacy and Human Rights literacy.

Achieving higher levels of sexual and reproductive health literacy also yields multiple benefits beyond healthHealth literacy is a form of empowerment, especially in situations where power relations (such as gender inequality) reduce the ability of certain groups to access information.

Sexual and reproductive health information, can support girls to delay sexual debut, choose ‘lower risk’ partners and better protect themselves during sex.

When it comes to Human Rights literacy, we emphasise specifically on understandings of dignity, equality and freedom which we communicate through our service delivery and Comprehensive Sexuality Programmes carried out.
