Incorporating Sexual and Reproductive Health into Emergency Preparedness and Planning

Sexual and reproductive health (SRH) is a significant public health need in all communities, including those facing emergencies. In emergency situations, there is often a lack of access to SRH services. These services need to be strengthened in preparation for future events to reduce SRH-related morbidity and mortality in times of emergencies.

An advocacy meeting on ‘Mainstreaming SRH in Humanitarian/ Disaster Management Programmes’ was conducted under the purview of the Outreach Units’ SPRINT Project on the 11th of March 2020 at FPA Sri Lanka’s Head-Office. Meeting objectives were to advocate for integrating Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) in disaster management programmes of NGOs and to share resources for implementing SRH in disaster management programmes.  Officials from the Disaster Management Centre, Disaster Relief Service Centre, Family Health Bureau, WHO, UNDP, UNFPA, Sri Lanka Red Cross Society, World Vision, IOM participated in the meeting as representatives from government and non-governmental agencies involved in humanitarian/ disaster management.

Dr. Harischandra  Yakandawala – Consultant FPASL conducted the meeting.
